SchoolMAPS aims to empower students in managing emotional and social well-being, build teachers’ capacity to identify and address mental distress in youth, establish emotional learning activities and peer support networks to enhance resilience, and integrate mental health programs into the state education system.
Globally, 50% of those with lifetime mental health problems first experience symptoms by the age of 14. As a result, children in primary and junior secondary schools with mental health problems go unrecognized, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. Additionally, teachers are not exempt from these issues as there have been documented findings of members of staff who require mental health interventions in varying degrees.
The School Mental Health Awareness Programs & Services (School MAPS) initiative represents a pioneering effort by the Lagos State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, to integrate mental health into the educational framework. Recognizing the critical role schools play in the development of children and adolescents, School MAPS aims to foster an environment conducive to mental, emotional, and social well-being. This initiative, while challenging, presents an unprecedented opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals and the overall health of our communities. it will be imperative to sustain the momentum, innovate continuously, and remain adaptable to the changing dynamics of mental health needs within our schools.
The Objective of the SchoolMaps Program is to integrate Mental health as a key component of the secondary school curriculum, develop the capacity of school counselors, teachers, and student-peers to provide support and also establish a pathway to access mental health services for students and teachers that require.
