IOM Nigeria and LagosMiND Launch Exploratory Collaboration to Strengthen Mental Health Support for Migrants in Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria and LagosMinD have begun an exploratory collaboration to assess and strengthen mental health service provision for both domestic and international migrants in Lagos. The partnership aims to lay the foundation for more inclusive and accessible care models in Lagos as a result of the state’s pivotal role in movement within and outside Nigeria.
Globally, nearly one in five people affected by humanitarian crises is estimated to experience depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia (WHO, 2023). Migrants and displaced populations are particularly vulnerable, facing barriers such as limited access to culturally appropriate care, stigma, and systemic exclusion. In Nigeria, where access to mental health care remains critically low, this collaboration aims to bridge accessibility gaps and expand psychosocial support services.
Through this partnership, IOM Nigeria brings decades of expertise in migration, health and protection, while LagosMinD contributes its innovative digital platforms, including a 24/7 mental health helpline and chat-based counselling service, already reaching people across Nigeria. Together, both organizations will explore scalable solutions that combine community-based interventions with technology-driven support to address unmet needs especially for migrants within Lagos.
“This partnership underscores our shared commitment to improving the mental health and psychosocial well-being of migrants and vulnerable communities,” said Narulita Ayu, MHPSS Officer, IOM Nigeria. “By combining technical expertise with innovative service delivery models, we can create pathways to care that are both inclusive and sustainable.”
Ejiro-oghene Paul, Knowledge and Digital Engagement Manager at LagosMinD, added: “Our services have already reached individuals across Nigeria, demonstrating the urgent demand for accessible support. This collaboration allows us to build on that reach, ensuring migrants are not left behind.”
Joshua Nnatus, Technology Manager at LagosMinD, noted: “While our digital services bridge critical gaps, low internet penetration remains a barrier. This partnership gives us the opportunity to align with IOM in addressing infrastructure and access challenges.”
Dr. Tolu, Director of LagosMinD’s Special Project Unit, emphasized: “The collaboration is mutually beneficial. IOM’s technical depth and LagosMinD’s innovation create a powerful synergy that can reshape how mental health services are delivered to migrant communities.”
